The Future of Josh Jacobs
Who wouldn’t want the number one running back from last season on their team? Well Josh Jacobs showed what he can do, and it now looks a foolish decision from the Raiders not to extend him.
He amassed 1,653 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns last season. On top of that he had managed another 400 yards in the passing game. Here we look at what teams should be looking to sign one of the best running backs in the game.
The Bears have struggled over the last few years but one area they have always tried to be strong in is the running game. They need to improve in most areas and bringing someone like Jacobs in would be an improvement. Last season they had David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert as their two main guys. Herbert struggled with injuries and Montgomery is now a free agent.
Herbert is still on the books but with Montgomery going it would make sense to bolster that running back room. Also, the Bears have got a large amount of money to play with this off-season. They have $98m available in cap space and so if they really wanted to they could splash on Jacobs.
Atlanta is a team in rebuild now and Jacobs would be a great piece to start that with. Jacobs at 25 is in his prime and this Falcons team loves to run the ball under Arthur Smith. They currently have Cordarrelle Patterson and Tyler Allgeier as their main guys, but change is needed. Patterson is 31 now and it feels like his time is up with the Falcons. Allgeier was a 5th round draft pick last year and although promising cant be the only guy.
The Falcons have got plenty of money to spend this year in free agency with just over $55m in cap space. The defence needs improvement but the main area on the offence that needs help is at running back. It would be surprising if they didn’t make a splash in free agency at running back and why not go for one of the best in the business.
The Texans have been a mess of an organisation for a few years now but this off-season they have a chance to make big moves. With the number two pick in the draft, you would think they will have a new QB to go with their new head coach, Demarco Ryans. Bringing in a stud running back wouldn’t be the worst move in the world in a free agency short of wide receiver talent.
They do have Dameon Pierce who they drafted last year but that is about it and he can’t do it all by himself. They have $35m in cap space at the moment and having strong run game will be a good thing to help their new rookie QB.
The Broncos are another team that need to bolster their running back room. Last season they lost Javonte Williams early to injury and only had veteran back-ups for the rest of the season. Melvin Gordon has left the team now and Latavius Murrey is not the future of this franchise.
With new head coach, Sean Payton, you would expect a running back to be bought in to create a Kamara/Ingram partnership, like he had in New Orleans. The Broncos don’t have an insane amount of cap space but with some restructuring they could do it. The defence is still very good and an addition like Jacobs would help a team that needs to compete now.
And finally…
The Raiders have made a significant error in not renewing Jacobs contract but that doesn’t mean they cant bring him back. Jacobs was their run offence last season and so to lose him would be a massive blow.
Currently they have got just over $46m in cap space and so would be able to give him a big contract. The only potential problem is they need to get a starting QB and so may spend big in that area. If they do that Jacobs might cost to much for them and they will have to look for cheaper alternatives.
